Flamethrower in World War

Flamethrower in village of Niinisalo July 1 1942

A flame or lava weapon is a device designed to fire and to mechanically control the flame flow for a very long time. These machines have been widely used since being used during World War I.

In some models, the flow of flame is formed by flammable liquids, and in some models the system works with gas. Flammable liquids have been used in most military flamethrowers, but natural gas and pressurized propane are considered safer at higher levels in commercial flame engines. The controlled burning capacity used by the military has been used by other people in agriculture (eg sugar cane fields) or other field work. These machines can either be carried by an operator or they can be designed to be installed by truck.

Military Flame Machines

The first military flame machines were used in close combat between the trenches during World War I, II. World War II has expanded its usage areas. Portable ones consist of two parts; The tank that the user carries on his back and the gun he holds. The reservoir part usually consists of two or three different cylinder shaped tubes. In two-cylinder systems, there is a combustible gas (usually nitrogen) compressed in one of the cylinders, and a diluted combustible liquid in the other. In the three-cylinder system, compressed gas is in the middle tube, and the other two are inflammable liquid in the outer tube. The pressurized gas pushes the fuel out of the cylinder and conveys it to the cylinder through the flexible fuel hose. The flame is sprayed with the retraction of the throttle. The flame machine is physically extremely painful for the user exposed to it, psychological for the user. So much so that they were forbidden at that time. As a consequence of the spraying of flame-retardant, flammable liquid compositions comes up to an effective range of 50-80 meters.

Military flame machines bring many risks for the user;

  • One of the biggest disadvantages is the weight that limits the user's mobility.
  • Because they consume fuel very quickly, use requires special care and attention. The soldier who uses it must use it sparingly.
  • It's very easy to spot it on battlefields. This makes the user an obvious target, especially for sharp markers.
  • Soldiers carrying flame machines are always a priority target for wars.
  • Since the range is much shorter than other weapons, the user who has to approach as close as possible to the target will have to risk his life.

French Georges Blind Mock Execution by Nazi Soldiers 1944

Georges Blind mock execution 1944

Georges Blind was born on November 17, 1904 in Belfort.

In 1941, he became a member of the Resistance of Ferrand Group. He operated during the night between the territory of Belfort and Alsace with the ambulance of the fire brigade. he was carrying officials of the Resistance, wanted people, weapons, intelligence and clandestine newspapers.

He was arrested by the Feldgendarmerie on 14 October 1944 in Belfort.

He underwent a mock execution between October 15 and October 23, 1944 before the citadel of Belfort. A photo immortalizes the fact as being the 'Smiling Shot'. This simulacrum was meant to make him speak to denounce his comrades.

This was a mock execution as an attempt to get Georges Blind, a French resistance fighter, to talk.

You can noticed that how Nazi soldiers placed Georges Blind at the corner of the building rather than against the stereotypical flat wall.

Georges didn’t talk.  Georges did not divulge any information. He was later sent to a concentration camp, where he was selected for termination on arrival, and he died in later November 1944.

The Great Sphinx of Giza  Excavated 1860s

The Great Sphinx is a sphinx sculpture located in the Gize pyramids region in Egypt's capital, Cairo.

It is the largest single-stone sculpture in the world, measuring 73.5 meters in length, 6 meters in width and 20 meters in height. A sculpture in the form of a head of a pharaoh with a head in the shape of a lying lion with a temple between its claws. Topkapi Palace Harem

This special video has taken by Ilhan Ozcan and shared by his permission.

Ottoman Harem

It is stated that on the average there are 400 women in the Ottoman harem and this number can be increased up to 1600. There are two basic functions of harem starting to take place in the state;

The first is the place where the sultan, prince, and the state elders are provided with concubines and spouses. This is very important because the princesses with Fatih left the marriage to foreign dynasties and this is an indispensable function for the continuation of the dynasty .

The second one is a school. An aristocracy based on education was established by the marriage of the carousels educated in the palace by young people who graduated from Enderun. It is the institution that allows the caravans to be educated to ensure the creation of an aristocracy connected to the dynasty and the dynasty.

In the Ottoman Empire, the harem was an environment in which everyone could not enter. The word harem means 'untouchable, holy'. Contrary to what is known, 'Harem-i Hümayun' in the Ottoman Empire was a institution parallel to the 'Enderun' mosques that brought up the statesmen.

Forth Bridge Engineering System 1887

Forth Bridge 1887

Forth Bridge  is a railway bridge in Scotland. It was built in 1890. It has three main sections, each about 520 meters long. The bridge is 2,529 meters long and 46 meters above sea level. Approximately 190 to 200 trains pass through the bridge every day.

The bridge is built on the principle of the cantilever bridge, where a cantilever beam supports a light central girder, a principle that has been used for thousands of years in the construction of bridges. In order to illustrate the use of tension and compression in the bridge, a demonstration in 1887 had the Japanese engineer Kaichi Watanabe supported between Fowler and Baker sitting in chairs. Fowler and Baker represent the cantilevers, with their arms in tension and the sticks under compression, and the bricks the cantilever end piers which are weighted with cast iron.
